Alrighty….so let’s get started…and I’m excited to share my life changing secrets with you!
How This Journey Started…
Well…I guess the best place to start is at the beginning…
You see…I was homeless!
I had been forced to make a decision around the age of 15 to leave home. My home life was somewhat disfunctional. My parents were good people. They made sure we had food on the table and clean clothes. But my father believed that children should be able to “fend” for themselves since he was made to do so at the age of 17. So…instead of making my mother choose between her husband and her child, I opted to make a way for myself on my own…and believe me, it was rough in the minefields! I slept in abandoned buildings with drug addicts and even slept on the trains of New York City during inclement weather or when it got bitterly cold outside.
Life was everything but a “bowl of cherries” for me, but one thing that stayed consistent throughout this whole experience is my positive outlook on life. No matter what…I had always told myself that this was an experience soon to be over and this too shall pass!
I never gave up hope that this part of my life was not the “be all, end all” and I worked toward that goal. The saying, “whatever doesn’t kill you…makes you stronger” is a true statement and is VERY true in my case. I had to sleep with one eye open every night hoping that some other homeless person or junkie wouldn’t kill me in my sleep and take my shoes!
Somehow, throughout this whole ordeal, I managed to graduate from high school because my mom had 13 children and I sometimes would stay with my one of brothers and sisters for a few days since I was number 12…and then off into the streets again!
One of my friends used to sneak me into his house at night after his parents had gone to sleep. I’d spend the night in his room, then slip out early in the morning, before they woke up. Well…one night we overslept!! So, I don’t have to tell you how that turned out!
People are often amazed when I tell my story and wondered how I survived. You see, for anyone facing hardships, New York City can be an unforgiving place to live and survive. Make no mistake about it, there is no stronger feeling than losing your dignity and having your humanity marginalized. Overcoming that level of defeat, which is the agony of homelessness, requires a Herculean effort. It is no small feat to fight for your life…make no mistake about it!
However, I truly believe this experience set the groundwork for the dedication and determination I’ve developed to succeed in life. I always knew deep down inside I was experiencing something in my life at that time, but it wasn’t who I was. I was not some homeless person, destitute with feelings of failure. I was SOMEBODY and despite it all, I still maintained my dignity and humanity through it all!
Living in homeless shelters, I’ve encountered many individuals who once called the streets of New York City home. Sadly, some of them never had the chance to transition to the status of “formerly homeless.”
You see…for me to say those two words, “formerly homeless” is my badge of honor. It’s a victory cry which means success in spite of unbelievable hardship. It’s the type of success at this point in my life that can be recognized in the simplest things:
Success to me was…opening a mailbox and seeing a utility bill that says “Carolyn A Best.”
Success to me was…boiling water on MY stove, opening up MY refrigerator and using MY bathroom.
Success to me was…having keys to my own apartment and enter and exit whenever I please–NO more sign-in sheets.
What Is Success To You?
Success is something you have to define for yourself, and no one can do it for you. Success could mean a sense of giving back to the world and making a difference. It could mean a sense of accomplishment and career progression. It could also mean getting out of the “rat race” and becoming your own boss. It could mean being able to travel and do the things you love. It could mean being able to provide the best possible upbringing for your children.
However you define “success” is entirely up to you! A one-size-fits-all approach is impossible.
But know one thing…it’s never too late to write your “success story.” Why? Because success has NO deadline.
Understanding success in YOUR terms doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, and many acts of courage, to uncover deeper questions at the heart of your success journey, but the most important thing you MUST do is… believe in yourself and know that you can achieve whatever goals you set your mind to accomplish.
Fast forward to today, I have experienced ALOT in my life, but one of the things I chose to do was to teach individuals life lessons about being successful and what that looks like for YOU. So…for the “average Joe or Jane,” who doesn’t know anything about getting out of whatever condition you are in…most likely it starts with increasing your income. You alway hear people say…”if I hit the lottery I would…” well, hitting the lottery is something out of your control, but designing a plan to increase your income is NOT out of your control…and is easier than you think!
Post COVID, people are still feeling the effects of experiencing unprecedented financial hardships beyond the norm to the point that some have lost their homes…and you know how I feel about being homeless!!
So, given ALL my life experiences, my contribution to helping any individual is to help you take back control of your finances and not have to depend solely on a paycheck. I will teach you how to create a blog and monetize it by using marketing software, video creation, as well as, and other digital marketing tools. My goal is to help you understand and implement exactly what needs to be in place in order to design a plan of action and achieve these goals you set for yourself.
